Online Documentation Project- iFixit Collaboration

Overview
This semester you will be doing an online documentation project through iFixit. This project will not only give you technical writing experience and the opportunity to collaborate with classmates, but it will also create documentation that helps real-world users to repair their devices and reduce e-waste.

Working in teams of 3-4, you will complete several project components. Full directions, instructional videos, and further resources are available on the Student Roadmap page, but the steps are summarized here.

  1. Create an account on iFixit.comand then join your assigned team at ifixit.com/Student

  2. Review the video and guidelines for choosing a device. Collaborate with your team to select one.

  3. Write a brief Project Proposal. Email it to me and to techwriting@ifixit.comin PDF format.

  4. Milestone 1: Create a troubleshooting page for your chosen device.

  5. Milestone 2: Create a device page for your device.

  6. Milestone 3: Create a rough draft of your repair guide.

  7. Milestone 4: Conduct peer review on your repair guide and revise it based on the feedback.

  8. Write a 2-3 page reflection memo on your experience. In particular, be sure to address the following questions:
    • What did you learn from this project?
    • What advice would you offer others, particularly undergraduate students, as they started a similar project?
    • What would you do differently and why?
    • What technical challenges, if any, did you experience and how did you resolve them?
    • How was your collaborative experience and what advice would you offer to others on working in teams?
