Visual Analysis Assignment

Directions

  • Read pages 9-120 in Robin Williams' Non-Designer's Design Book (though I recommend skimming Part II too).


  • Read the following from the Anderson textbook
    • Chapter 12 “Creating Reader-Centered Graphics”
    • “Writer’s Reference Guide: Creating Eleven Types of Reader-Centered Graphics” (pages 351-371)
    • Chapter 13- “Designing Reader-Centered Pages and Documents”

  1. After reading the assigned material, use the design principles and guidelines to analyze the sample publication (Blues Healthline newsletter) available on the "Additional Readings" link on WebCT:
  2. What is Due-
    Using the language and concepts (things like repetition, hierarchy, color, and font choice) from all of the readings, identify and analyze the visual layout and design of the example publication (Blues Healthline newsletter). You should point to specific examples in these materials and explain how/why they work (or don't) to make the materials usable and attractive. Your analysis should discuss at least 10 examples and should be equivalent in length to at least three to four double spaced, typed page.

  3. Post your response to the Discussion thread on WebCT entitled Visual Analysis.

This assignment is worth 10% of your final grade.
